1,400 homes lose power after serious crash topples powerlines at Blackmans Bay

Two people have been taken to hospital, one with serious injuries, after a car crashed and brought down powerlines south of Hobart this morning.

The single-vehicle crash happened on Burwood Drive at Blackmans Bay, bringing down powerlines and cutting electricity to around 1,400 properties in Blackmans Bay and Huntingfield.

Police say one person sustained serious injuries and has been taken to the Royal Hobart Hospital.

A second person suffered non-life-threatening injuries and was also transported to the hospital.

TasNetworks said it had reduced the number of affected customers to around 320 through switching.

However, the remaining properties are expected to be without power for most of the day because two poles need replacing.

The fallen powerlines forced the closure of Burwood Drive between Dianella Drive and Lomandra Drive.

Police have asked motorists to avoid the area to allow emergency services to work at the scene.

TasNetworks urged people to stay at least 10 metres from any fallen powerlines or other damage and to report it on 132 004.
