A tree sculpture created by chainsaw artist Eddie Freeman in 2012 will be removed from Sorell’s Pioneer Park on Thursday due to extensive decay.

The sculpture, which features a variety of local fauna and historical elements from Sorell’s pioneer days, was carved into an old tree by Freeman using a chainsaw and die-grinder.

Among the intricate designs are an eagle, duck, possum, owl, swan, cart wheel, horseshoe, a boy riding a horse and a blacksmith’s anvil.

The Sorell Council says leaving the sculpture in place is a safety hazard and has scheduled its removal for Thursday, September 19.

“A crane will be needed to remove the tree and as a result, Pioneer Park, the tennis court car park, and a section of the lower rivulet path will be closed for the day,” a spokesperson said.

“The sculpture will be stored at our depot where we will carry out conservation work to salvage as much of the sculpture as possible so we can repurpose it in some way.”
