A sinkhole has opened up next to the promenade at Long Beach Reserve in Sandy Bay, prompting the Hobart City Council to fence off the area.
A member of the public spotted the deep hole early this morning.
The council said their parks team responded first thing and confirmed the hole is a small sinkhole tunnelling back towards the beach.
The area has been taped off, with proper fencing to follow shortly.
“Please keep away from this area, especially if you have a dog, which should be on a lead in this area anyway,” the Hobart City Council said in a social media post.
The taped-off section is easy to walk around, the council said.
Engineers are assessing the problem, after which the council expects to have a clearer idea of how long the closure will need to stay in place.
The rest of the promenade and beach area remains open, along with the playground and barbecue sites.
