A stretch of the Channel Highway south of Margate is getting a lower speed limit after a string of crashes involving vehicles turning in and out of driveways and intersections.

The transport commissioner has approved extending the existing 60km/h zone by about 420 metres towards Barretta.

The change follows an assessment by the Department of State Growth, prompted by a community submission calling for a speed review.

“State Growth’s assessment supported a safer speed limit in this area because of several crashes involving vehicles turning in and out of driveways and intersections,” the department said.

“The safer speed limit will help reduce the risk of crashes and improve road safety in the community by allowing drivers more time to safely turn on and off the highway and giving them more time to stop to prevent a crash.”

New speed limit signs are expected to go up next week, with the change to take effect once they are installed.

‘New speed limit ahead’ signs will also be put in place to warn drivers.
