A speed limit reduction has been approved for a 2.8-kilometre stretch of Grasstree Hill Road near Richmond.

The speed limit along the section between Cold Blow Road and Malcolms Hut Road will be lowered from 100km/h to 80km/h.

A review found the sealed section of the road is narrow with unsealed shoulders and there are trees and power poles close to the road.

State Growth say the reduction will improve safety by providing more time for a driver to regain control of their vehicle in the event of an error.

“The road is also popular with cyclists and is used by slow-moving agricultural machinery,” they said.

The new speed limit is consistent with the limit on surrounding roads, including the continuation of Grasstree Hill Road to the south, and will add approximately 25 seconds to current travel times.

A State Growth spokesperson said the new speed limit will come into effect once new signage has been installed, which is expected to be completed next week.

“New speed limit ahead” signs will also be placed to warn road users of the change.

“Road users are reminded to follow the posted speed limits and always drive to the conditions,” a spokesperson said.

It’s understood the change was made following requests from the local community.
