Fifteen chickens have allegedly been stolen from a southern Tasmanian school, leaving staff and students “upset”.

Claremont College teacher Anna Branch said she noticed the school’s flock of hyline chickens looked sparse on Tuesday.

“I just sort of looked down and went, ‘Hmm, that doesn’t actually seem to be a huge amount of chooks there,” she told the ABC.

Branch believes the current egg shortage may have been a factor behind the theft.

“There is an egg shortage — You know, laying chooks are hard to get hold of,” she told the ABC.

It is believed 15 of the 48 chickens in the flock are gone.

Speaking to Pulse, a Tasmania Police spokesperson said a report has been made to authorities and the matter will be investigated.

The school is still trying to work out when the chickens went missing.
