The Kingborough Council has admitted to “unforeseen” issues that have caused a 100-day delay to the Summerleas Road upgrade project.
As previously reported by Pulse, work on the new underpass began in early June and was initially meant to be completed within 10 weeks.
But the project’s completion date has now been pushed back by three months.
The option of temporarily re-opening the road was considered, however the council said partial excavation safety concerns made this option unfeasible.
Mayor Paula Wriedt says she is aware the delays and associated detour has caused “frustration” and “inconvenienced” the community.
“Unfortunately, when we had closed the road, there were a range of unforeseen things that occurred,” she told Local Radio.
“There was some external infrastructure that needed to be moved and there was a delay in that happening and that has impeded the timeline significantly.”
Wriedt says work is “well underway” again should be completed “12 weeks from now” in early December.
“That’s not what we wanted to do and it’s not the standard that we expect and we know our community expects,” she said.
“So we will be doing a review into this project delivery once it’s finished.”
