Man arrested over alleged shooting at Wynyard home in Tasmania's north-west

A man has been arrested almost 24 hours after a shooting at a Tasmanian home left another man seriously injured and in hospital.

The arrest was made at a residential property in Wynyard around 1:15pm today, following an overnight search across the state’s north-west.

Tasmania Police said the man was taken into custody “during an operation involving police and specialist resources”.

No serious injuries were reported during the arrest.

Emergency services were called to a home on Sandpiper Road in Wynyard after reports a man had been shot in the stomach.

The victim, a Tasmanian man in his late 30s, was rushed to hospital in a serious condition.

He is now described as being in a “serious but stable” condition and continues to receive medical treatment.

Police said initial investigations indicated the man sustained a single gunshot wound from a small-calibre rifle.

Investigators believe the two men knew each other and were involved in a disturbance at the front of the property before the shooting.

The search for the suspect drew a heavy police response on Wednesday afternoon, including the Special Operations Group (SOG) and drones.

Police thanked the community for its co-operation during the search.

“A police presence will remain, but there is no active search for other suspects,” police said.

Charges are yet to be laid.
