Tasmania Police charge 75-year-old over alleged child abuse material

A 75-year-old Tasmanian man has been charged with allegedly possessing child abuse material after police traced the content being uploaded to the internet.

The man from Norwood in Launceston was arrested on Wednesday.

Tasmania Police said detectives executed a search warrant at his home and seized “numerous” of digital devices for examination.

The investigation was carried out by the Tasmanian Joint Anti-Child Exploitation Team, made up of Tasmania Police’s High-Risk Child Exploitation Unit and the Australian Federal Police.

Police said officers identified the man as a suspect after allegedly detecting child abuse material being uploaded online.

He has been remanded in custody and is due to reappear in court later this month.

“Online child abuse is a serious crime type,” police said.

“Tasmania Police, with the support of its partners, is committed to stopping these crimes and keeping our children safe.”

“If you have seen inappropriate behaviour online that you suspect is child abuse, report it.”

Reports can be made to Tasmania Police on 131 444 or to the Australian Centre to Counter Child Exploitation.
