Tasmania’s political landscape could soon welcome a new addition, with the state Nationals preparing to re-enter the ring.
The party, aiming to contest the next state election, has officially applied for registration with the Tasmanian Electoral Commission.
This latest revival marks another chapter in the Nationals’ long and bumpy history in the state, dating back to their first appearance in the early 1900s.
Over the decades, the party has undergone several transformations, operating under various names like the Country Party, Centre Party and National Country Party.
Despite these efforts, electoral success has been elusive, leading to periods of dissolution and dormancy.
The Electoral Commission’s announcement on Saturday confirmed receipt of their application, boasting a membership of 100 people, including former Liberals Lara Alexander and John Tucker.
The party is seeking registration under the official name ‘The National Party of Australia – Tasmania’, with ‘The Nationals’ as its abbreviated name on ballot papers.
Under the Electoral Act 2004, a 30-day window is now open for any objections to the registration.
Following this period, the Commission will have 21 days to reach a final decision.
