A teenage P-plater has had their car clamped after police allegedly caught them driving with too many passengers and alcohol in their system in Launceston.

The 17-year-old was pulled over on George Town Road in Newnham at 1:15am this morning.

A police officer on routine patrol had spotted a blue Jaguar sedan allegedly hooning.

Police found the driver had too many passengers in the car, with occupants aged between 16 and 21.

That is a breach of P1 licence conditions, which restrict how many passengers a provisional driver can carry.

The teen also returned a positive breath test for alcohol, before a breath analysis allegedly came back with a reading of 0.039.

The vehicle has been clamped and the youth will appear in court at a later date.

The incident comes during National Road Safety Week.

Tasmania Police used the case as a reminder for drivers to be responsible behind the wheel.

“[Police are] reminding members of the public to drive in a manner which does not put the lives of their passengers, other members of the public or themselves at risk of serious injury or death,” a spokesperson said.
