A teenager has been charged over an alleged retail theft spree across greater Hobart, with police recovering more than $6,500 worth of allegedly stolen goods.
Tasmania Police announced the charges after an investigation into alleged thefts at several stores, including outlets at Eastlands and in the Hobart CBD.
The 16-year-old girl has been charged with six counts of stealing, two of trespass, one of possession of stolen property and one of obstructing police.
Items recovered by police include skincare and beauty products, Tommy Hilfiger clothing, LEGO sets, underwear and haircare goods.
Police allege the majority of the items were intended for resale on social media platforms.
“We’re urging the community to exercise caution when purchasing items through Facebook Marketplace and similar platforms,” police said.
“If a deal seems too good to be true, it likely is.”
Police warned that buying suspiciously cheap goods could carry legal risks for the purchaser.
“Goods being sold well below retail value may be stolen property and purchasing such items can result in legal consequences,” police said.
Shoppers were advised to be wary of unusually cheap items, check seller histories and avoid rushed transactions.
Anyone with information about suspicious marketplace activity has been urged to contact police on 131 444 or report anonymously to Crime Stoppers.
