'Difficult to control': Prepare to leave warning downgraded bushfire near Buckland in Tasmania's east

Updated 5pm, Saturday November 2: The bushfire warning level has now been downgraded to monitor conditions.

“There is no immediate threat,” the TFS says.

“The fire is travelling towards westerley towards Sand River Road and Buckland Road.”

Earlier: Smoke is blanketing the Buckland area on the state’s east coast as a bushfire burns in the vicinity of Sand River Road.

The blaze was reported to authorities around 6pm on Friday night, with a watch and act and current prepare to leave warning later issued.

The Tasmania Fire Service at 2:45pm on Saturday said the fire was expected to impact Sand River Road, Buckland Road and surrounding areas within two hours.

“The fire is travelling westerly … [and] is expected to be difficult to control,” the TFS warns.

“Embers, smoke, and ash may fall on Sand River Road, Buckland Road and surrounding areas.”

Firefighters are currently on the ground battling the blaze, with multiple helicopters arriving at the scene around 3:30pm.

Tasmania Police have closed Sand River Road at Buckland Road and are turning those who do not need to be in the area around.

The Tasmania Fire Service say people nearby should take action now to protect themselves and their home.

“If you are not prepared for a bushfire, be ready to leave for a safer place,” they said.

“Only travel if it is safe for you to do so. If you have made a bushfire plan, check it now.”

“If you don’t live near Sand River Road, Buckland Road and surrounding areas, stay away.”

A severe weather warning is in place for the much of the state this afternoon, with gusts in excess of 100km/h expected.
