An electronic sign outside a Devonport car dealership was tampered with overnight to display a crude message to passing motorists.

The message at Motors Devonport, which cannot be published for legal reasons, named a man and made a lewd claim about him.

It appeared alongside advertising for the Nissan X-Trail and a V8 Patrol.

It is not known how the sign was accessed or how long the message was visible.

An employee said the sign had since been fixed and parent company Eagers Automotive was investigating what happened.

He said no one at the business knew anything about it and he could not comment further.

In August, a portable electronic traffic sign on the Bass Highway in the north-west was also allegedly tampered with to display a vulgar message.

A spokesperson for Building Tasmania, formerly the Department of State Growth, said at the time the sign was fixed promptly after the issue was reported.
