Flash flooding possible as 50mm of rain hits north-west town in six hours

Parts of northern and western Tasmania are being lashed by heavy rainfall as a low-pressure system in Bass Strait lingers over the state.

The Bureau of Meteorology has issued a severe weather warning for the North West Coast and parts of the Western, Central North and Central Plateau forecast districts.

“Heavy rainfall continues for parts of the north and west,” the bureau said.

“Heavy rainfall rain which may lead to flash flooding is forecast for the north-west of Tasmania today.”

“Six-hourly rainfall totals between 35 to 50mm are likely with isolated totals up to 60mm.”

“Locations which may be affected include Devonport, Burnie, Smithton, Strahan, Queenstown and Zeehan.”

The low is expected to weaken during the day as it moves eastwards.

50mm of rain was recorded at Waratah in the six hours to 6:50am on Thursday morning.

The weather bureau has also issued a minor flood warning for the North Esk River from Corra Linn to Mowbray and surrounds.

They say flooding in nearby streams and rivers is likely and that some low-lying properties may become isolated by flood waters during the next 6-12 hours.
