Hobart Airport is exploring plans to build a hotel next to its terminal, pointing to years of strong passenger growth to support the project.
The airport is exploring an on-airport hotel on the corner of Holyman and Grueber Avenue at Cambridge, a short walk from the terminal.
Chief financial and commercial officer Kate Gillies said the proposal was the next stage in a long-term plan to make the airport a gateway for the state.
“Hobart Airport has been one of Australia’s fastest-growing airports in recent years, with strong passenger growth creating new opportunities for investment and development across the precinct,” Gillies said.
She said the airport had seen annual passenger growth of 4.9%, well above the national average of 1.8%.
If it goes ahead, the hotel would cater to a mix of guests, including holidaymakers, business travellers, airline crew and passengers needing a bed close to the terminal before an early flight.
Early plans include guest rooms, food and drink options and flexible spaces.
Gillies said the wider site could also make room for offices and other commercial uses over time.
The airport is now talking to experienced hotel operators to gauge interest and sharpen the concept.
“We’re looking to work with a partner who shares our ambition to explore what a future airport hotel could look like, one that enhances the travel experience while showcasing what makes Tasmania unique,” she said.
“The successful partner will work with us and our project partners to further develop the concept and assess the opportunity.”
The search for an operator is being run by Horwath HTL on behalf of the airport and closes on July 27.
The proposal would add to the airport’s accommodation options, which already include the Mantra hotel and the nearby BIG4 tourist park.
