A Launceston grandmother has won more than $5.2 million in Powerball after buying a ticket to kill time in a hospital waiting room.
The woman held the only division one winning entry in the country in Powerball draw 1562, drawn on Thursday.
Her total prize came to $5,213,405.25, boosted by the number of entries purchased in the draw.
She bought a 36-game QuickPick on The Lott website while waiting for a hospital appointment.

“I was at the hospital yesterday, waiting for an appointment and it was boring,” she said.
“I decided to purchase a ticket into the Powerball draw to pass some time. I can’t believe it.”

She said she laughed when an official from The Lott confirmed the news earlier this morning.
“It’s beautiful! I checked the win last night and I haven’t slept a wink,” she said.
“I laid next to my phone with the prize amount right beside me all night, couldn’t take my eyes off it!”
She said her husband was stunned when she broke the news.

“I told my husband that we’d won last night and he was in so much shock,” she said.
“I think it will take a while before we can both believe the news.”
The win comes at a particularly meaningful time for the grandmother, who said she now plans to retire.
“I can finally retire which has come at the most perfect time because I’m having some health issues,” she said.
She also plans to buy houses for her children and grandchildren and spoil her dog even more.
“And I can’t forget about my beloved dog who will be even more spoiled,” she said.
The winning numbers in the draw were 11, 34, 30, 35, 28, 4 and 29, with the Powerball number 3.
