A ‘shoeless’ man has been rescued by authorities after he attempted to scale Cradle Mountain bare-footed.
The 22-year-old from interstate called emergency services around 7:30am on Saturday for help near the iconic peak.
He told police he had been walking for about an hour and was trying to scale the mountain without footwear.
The man reported that his feet were frostbitten and injured, leaving him unable to walk.
Tasmania Police Sergeant Jeremy Williams said officers provided assistance to the man, which included giving him a pair of shoes, escorted him back to the Dove Lake viewing centre.
“At the time, although the weather was fine, the temperature was in the negatives,” he said.
Williams used the incident as a timely reminder to walkers of the need to be “properly prepared with equipment and experience” when venturing into the wilderness.
