Oatlands has been hit with tougher water restrictions as dry conditions keep draining the town’s dam supply.
Stage 2 water restrictions are now in place for the southern midlands town after ongoing low rainfall pushed water levels at the Blackman River dams further down.
The town was placed under stage 1 water restrictions only last month.
TasWater’s head of communications and engagement Liz Hafner said the move was needed to protect the region’s water supply.
“Continued low rainfall and declining dam levels had made it necessary to escalate restrictions at Oatlands,” Hafner said.

The tighter rules aim to cut non-essential water use by 50% by pushing residents to be more careful with how they use water.
“These restrictions are focused outside of the home and include changes such as allocated days for watering gardens and sports grounds, and with the watering of lawns no longer permitted,” she said.
“This will mean a change to the routines of some residents, but with support from the community these changes will significantly boost the amount of water available in the system.”
TasWater is keeping a close eye on local conditions and said they will wind back restrictions when the weather improves.
“Once we’ve seen consistent rain and stronger river flows, we will move to lift restrictions,” Hafner said.
