The Hobart RecLink Community Cup is back for another year, with the Van Diemen Dogs (Tassie musicians) and the Ramonas (Tassie politicians and media) set to face off in what’s sure to be a highly entertaining match.

The annual event is always a crowd-pleaser and this year’s edition will be no different, with a mix of talented and not-so-talented players taking to the field – alongside live music, food trucks and crowd activations.

The Dogs are looking to extend their winning streak to five years, while the Ramonas are eager to break their rivals’ streak and claim bragging rights.

“It’s strong. It’s very strong,” Dogs player Joe Stone said of the rivalry.

“Camaraderie’s been good at training, but we’ve had a couple of practice matches and there’s definitely been a little bit of foaming at the mouth.”

“So I’m very keen to see the rivalry take to the field on Sunday.”

Despite his team’s recent success, Stone admitted he’s not a natural footballer.

“I think my special talent is just being in the wrong place at the right time,” he said.

Ramonas player Kaspar Deane is also taking a realistic approach to the match, admitting he broke his ankle while running in a straight line during last year’s game.

“If we don’t win this time around, I’ll probably have to hang up the boots,” he said.

The event raises much-needed funds for Reclink Australia’s sport, art and recreation programs, which improve the lives of those experiencing mental illness, family violence, homelessness, social isolation, gambling harm, unemployment, and drug and alcohol rehabilitation.

Reclink’s Tasmanian Sport and Recreation Manager Brett Geeves said the event is a great way to raise valuable funds for Tasmanians who need it most.

“[This fundraiser] allows us to expand on our staple programs with scholarships for government school representatives, and [is] a chance to expand our reach into regional areas where we know isolation for individuals is enhanced.”

The Hobart RecLink Community Cup will be held at Queenborough Oval in Sandy Bay on Sunday August 25, with gates opening at noon. Tickets will be available on the gate or online.
