A new Launceston coffee shop is bringing “click and collect” to Tasmania’s cafe scene, letting customers order ahead and have their drink brought straight to their car.
Subsip Coffee Co. owner Mitchell Cordell built an app that lets customers pre-order their coffee and tap a button to let the barista know they have arrived out the front.
“You can pre-order even the night before if you want,” Cordell told Pulse.
“It’ll come through our back office to the barista, you’ve just given them the details like the number plate and then we can mark preparing and that’ll shoot to your phone saying it’s being prepared.”

“And then when you’re out the front you just press like ‘I’m here’ and then the barista will bring the coffee out to you.”
Cordell said he doesn’t know of anyone else in Tasmania doing kerbside pickup for coffee.

The shop has three parking spots out front, and customers can also let staff know if they’re in the car park next door.
Subsip opened just over a week ago and Cordell said things are picking up quickly.
Around 110 people have signed up to the app so far.
“I think it’s got the ability to go pretty crazy,” he said.

Coffees ordered through the app are currently $4 while launching the business, with subscription packages launching next week, where a three-day plan will cost $15 a week and a five-day plan $24, meaning customers pay less than $5 for a large coffee.
“I got sick of sort of going to a cafe and getting my almond latte and spending $7 for a small coffee,” Cordell said.
“If you can look at your overheads and sort of calculate it a bit you don’t need to go crazy with the prices.”
It’s not Cordell’s first venture.

He previously ran The Macaron Merchant on Elizabeth Street in Launceston.
“I’ve learned a fair bit from that business into this one,” he said.
Cordell said the shop’s location gives him a built-in advantage, with Bathurst Street being one of the cities busiest streets.
His goal is simple – to make coffee affordable again.
“Trying to not treat coffee as a luxury anymore,” he said.
“If I can get people having their morning coffees, you know, for a little bit cheaper so they can afford it instead of it being a luxury.”
Customers can sign up at subsipcoffee.com.au or visit the shop at 1/31 Bathurst Street to get set up in person.
