Tributes are flowing for a young Tasmanian boy who passed away on Wednesday after a courageous lifelong battle with brain cancer.

George McNees, 9, was just 11-months-old when he was diagnosed with the disease.

Despite undergoing surgery that successfully removed 97% of a brain tumour, George’s fight was far from over.

He was given a 30% chance of survival with regular chemotherapy and treatment.

A passionate sports fan, George supported the Tasmania JackJumpers, North Melbourne Football Club and his local Clarence Roos.

The JackJumpers paid tribute to McNees, saying they were “privileged” to have met him during their first season and witness his “brave fight” in recent years.

“We send his parents Sarah and Darren and sister Arabella our love and support during this very sad time,” the team said.

The Clarence Football Club described George as “an absolute fighter” and “absolute inspiration”.

“A beautiful boy who loved life and sport more than anything,” the club said.

“Rest in peace George, keep kicking goals and shine bright.”

North Melbourne said they were “shattered” to share the news of George’s passing.

Despite surgery, George faced a long battle with cancer

“A big Roos man from the start, he spent time at the club and at our home fixtures in Melbourne and Hobart and had a huge impact on our players and staff,” the club said.

“Our thoughts are with George’s mum Sarah, dad Darren, sister Arabella and the entire McNees family.”

North Melbourne’s AFLW team will wear black armbands in Sunday’s match to raise funds for the Good Friday Appeal, supporting Melbourne’s Royal Children’s Hospital.
