Tasmanians on the east coast are being warned to batten down the hatches, with damaging winds set to lash the region early tomorrow morning.

The Bureau of Meteorology (BOM) has issued a severe weather warning for Thursday, forecasting wind gusts of up to 100km/h from a strengthening northwesterly flow ahead of an approaching cold front.

The wild weather is expected to ease by Thursday afternoon, but the BOM warns another blast is on the way.

“On Friday morning, in the wake of the cold front, another vigorous northwesterly flow is expected to develop associated with a low-pressure system that will pass to the south of the state,” the BOM said.

“This will likely see a severe weather warning for damaging winds re-issued to broader areas of the state for Friday.”

Swansea, Bicheno and Orford are among the locations that may be affected.
