Tasmanians in the north of the state are being warned of heavy rainfall and damaging winds that could lead to flash flooding and power outages from early Sunday morning.

The Bureau of Meteorology has issued a severe weather warning for the north and north-eastern parts of the island, including Launceston, Devonport and Scottsdale.

A cold front with “very moist and windy conditions” is expected to bring rain and thunderstorms from early Sunday morning, with six-hourly rainfall totals of 20mm to 40mm likely.

Isolated totals of up to 80mm are possible with thunderstorms, the Bureau said.

Damaging north to north-westerly winds averaging 60km/h to 70km/h with peak gusts of around 100km/h are also likely about elevated terrain from early Sunday morning.

These winds could cause outages and property damage in areas at lower elevations with thunderstorms.

The Bureau expects the risks to ease during Sunday afternoon once the front has crossed the state.
