Police hunting suspect as man in hospital after Wynyard shooting

Police are set to maintain a heavy presence in Tasmania’s north-west overnight and into Thursday as the hunt continues for the person suspected of shooting a man in the stomach at a Wynyard home.

As of 10:30pm Wednesday, police said no arrests had been made over the incident on Sandpiper Road, which unfolded around 3:05pm.

The suspected shooter left the scene before officers arrived.

A man aged in his late 30s remains in a serious condition in hospital after sustaining a single gunshot wound from a small calibre rifle.

Police have recovered a firearm at the scene, which will undergo testing.

Investigators believe the people involved knew each other and were involved in a disturbance at the front of the property before the shooting.

“No other injuries have been reported and a crime scene has been declared at the address,” a police spokesperson said on Wednesday evening.

Multiple police units, including specialist resources, are involved in the search and investigation.

People in the Burnie and Wynyard areas may notice an increased police presence as efforts to locate those involved continue.

Police have urged the public to stay away from the area.

“Residents in the area … may notice an increased police presence during this time,” police said.

“To assist police, members of the public are advised to avoid the area while investigations are under way.”

No other injuries have been reported.
