Sacred Heart College in New Town has unveiled a $2.4 million multipurpose facility, expanding its sporting opportunities for students.

The brand new courts were launched as part of Catholic Education Tasmania’s capital works program, with Tasmanian JackJumpers head coach Scott Roth officiating the opening.

The facility features a full-sized, competition-ready court suitable for basketball and netball, along with markings for four-square and pickleball.

An undercover structure ensures the space can be used year-round in all weather conditions.

“These new courts represent a significant investment in student participation, wellbeing and school life, further strengthening Sacred Heart College’s commitment to providing exceptional facilities and opportunities for its students and community,” principal Elizabeth McDougall said.

“This is an investment not just in sport, but in the overall experience of our students, ensuring they can remain active, engaged and connected all year round.”

McDougall said having Roth cut the ribbon was a highlight for the school community.

“Scott Roth has played an extraordinary role in shaping modern Tasmanian basketball. Having him officially open our new courts is incredibly special for our students and wider College community,” she said.

“He is widely recognised for leading the club to NBL success and elevating Tasmania’s presence on the national basketball stage. His involvement highlights the significance of this exciting development for Sacred Heart College.”

After the official launch, students got the chance to take part in a shoot-out with players from the Hobart Chargers, putting the new courts to the test.

Beyond sport, MacDougall said the facility is designed to serve multiple purposes across the school.

“Designed with versatility in mind, the space also serves as a functional and multipurpose venue for classes, assemblies and playtime activities,” McDougall said.
